There's a few areas to stay in Busan that's affordable and full of eating places. One is Seomyeon district, this is a shopping district where Lotte departmental store and an underground shopping district. The other is near Nampo district and very near the Diamond Tower. We stayed at Soyu Hotel right at the foot of Diamond Tower. This area has alot of restaurants and you don't have to travel far for good food.
참숯생갈비 Charcoal grilled ribs
This place was an accidental find because we wanted to go to Soorin Busan but it was full and this next best option was here. It's a place that the locals visit and it doesn't get as local as this. The staff were rather annoyed that we don't speak Korean, generally, the older generation of Koreans are so. They handed over picture meals and then we point at each picture and show a finger or two indicating our quantity. If the menus are in Korean, google translate does a fair good job of translating it. But one trick I learnt, step in the restaurant and say "Mi-guk" which loosely means "American", which is like saying that you speak English.
I wanted to show off my basic Korean but I can't get beyond pointing at the picture and saying "Yee-gor, hana" which loosely translates to " one of these". Most of the time, I get what I ordered served. So that seems to work.
A word of caution, when in Rome, let the Ajumma's grill your meat as there's a procedure to follow, which is pork before beef (I think), which we butchered and angered the Ajummas in the shop and were firmly told to stop like a preschool teacher. Oops. Otherwise, it was a pretty good experience to dine like a local.
소우린 부산중앙동점 Soorin Busan Jungang - dong branch
My travelling crowd passed by this restaurant and was asked by the boss to come try. It was after dinner so it wasn't possible. The next day we went back but they didn't have a table. We manage to snag a table on the returning trip from Jeju and were glad that we came back. Even though we were staying in Seomyeon area and was a 15 minutes taxi ride
Soorin has their meats aged in water, which is something pretty unique and the travelling crowd being bbq lovers gamingly ordered a platter.
